Far fewer older men join dating services than older women.  Other fringe types who aren’t likely to have a field day in a dating service are members of minority groups, people who are notably unattractive or overweight, people with rigid religious requirements, singles with more than two children living with them, and chain smokers.

A weighted average of the number of responses received from several studies shows that a typical man receives 10.5 responses, whereas a typical woman receives 14.5 replies. 

For men…

Factors that increase the number responses include:

  • being older and taller

  • mentioning educational and professional success or an interest for expensive cultural activities

  • conveying an aura of masculinity, and

  • seeking a generally attractive woman but avoiding sexual references.

 For women…

Factors that increase the number of responses, include:

  • physical attractiveness (e.g. being younger and lighter and mentioning a preference for sports

  • providing positive or neutral self descriptions, especially intelligence, and

  • mentioning or alluding to sex.  For both men and women, writing an ad with originality or flair increased the number of respondents, as did seemingly trivial traits like possessing red or salt and pepper hair.
